The digital music entertainment revolution is just beginning.Microsoft announced at last year launch of the Zune music player,but does Microsoft new device live up to its hype as the "king" music player,iPod? I try to compare both of it

The zune is only available with a 30GB hard disk and at USD 250,it cost the sma as a comparably specified iPod.The size of the device reminds me of the first generation iPod but unlike the Apple player's glossy surface, the Zune makes do with a matte plastic material.That make surface more resistant to scratches but it does look a bit dull.The Zune is also chunkier and weight 30 grams more than its competitor.The plus points are it comes with a five way switch and 2 buttons for easy handling.

It takes a good three seconds to power up and for the simple,yet pretty menu to be displayed.Sub menus blend smoothly while changing and you can choose a background image.even those new to MP3 players will appreciate the intuitive navigation and it quickly becomes second nature to use.It also sorts songs faster than the iPod.

Although the Microsoft players could really pump up the volume,it loses out to the iPod when it comes to sound quality.However,concerning the different types of media supported,the two devices tied,apart from music,the Zune also handles photos and videos.It also does up over the iPod by having a screen that's 1 cm larger for better viewing.

Even the list of features is longer in the case of the new comer.The Zune offers an integrated FM radio as well allowing songs to be transferred over WiFi.Unfortunate that the received music files could only be played three times or kept for three days,they're automatically deleted - even if it's music that you recorded yourself.

Battery life didn't macth up to that of the iPod.After a good 13 hours of play( without WiFi) the battery was drained whereas the iPod continued playing another two albums.With the include USB 2.0 cable,the Zune can be connected to any PC but Zune software needs to be installed to add new songs.That doesn't make much more sense as it stops the player from being used as a mobile data storage device for exchanging files.

The Zune software reminded me a lot of Apples's iTunes.The user can buy songs from the Zune Markerplace and manage existing songs but you cannot listen to DRM protected files from another online stores,if you have existing library of DRM encorded songs from Napster,Rhapsody or iTunes,you are simply out of luck.At least the software is intuitive and easy to use.

When it comes to music,Microsoft's player cannot trump the entrenched iPod and its online iTunes Store.The Zune Marketplace offers 2 million songs compared to the 3.5 million available on iTunes and there are also no videos or podcasts currently available for the Zune.But the most irritating thing is strange payment system; you pay for songs in the online store using Microsoft points which are linked to the latest exchange rates.For example a song costing 79 points actually costs US 99 cents,so ti is hard to figure out how much you are actually paying.The points account can only be created after a minimum payment of US 5.00

Ok guys,Microsoft's iPod challenger reminds us of tape cassettes from the past,copies are never as good as the original.Nevertheless,Apple cannot underestimate the Zune as Microsoft has kicked off many products as mere copies before turning them into market leaders with its huge budget.The zune could well follow suit.Hopefully it will help my fellow readers to buy the bestMP3 players.

Hi,for a week I not make a new post because the personal problem.but I solved it already.I also busy with my work,emm.. To night ( for a local time in my country) I want to share with you about Mozilla fire fox.I think all of you like Mozilla,cause it so simple and better to surf internet. For Mozilla user,the memory requirement increases rapidly to more than 100 MB when you surf for a long time or when many tabs or windows are open and finally slows down the system :( but don't worry it can be changed.

Two things make the Firefox to increase the memory usage.All site opened in tabs and windows occupy memory space: this space remains occupied even after minimizing the windows.Furthermore ,Firefox also save 50 recently visited website in the main memory of the PC in order to facilities quick browsing through the session history.This number is unnecessarily big.You should reduce the number of saved sites.For that, enter " about : config " in the address bar.Search the following setting in the options list and double click on it to edit it:

The Ultra Mobile PC ( UMPC ) is primed to make a big splash in 2007.With a 7 in, 800 x 480 minimum resolution screen and running ( initially, at least ) Windows Table PC Edition,UMPCs can run any full blown Windows software although it may require interface tweaks to accommodate the small form factor.The addition of Wi Fi and any touchscreens make them ideal for anyone who rates mobility over performance.Early incarnations have yet to set the world alight, but research from In - Stat suggests UMPC shipments could hit 7.8 million units by 2011.With Intel promising to increase investment in the Steeley low power processor that could push battery life to seven hours running Windows Vista, the idea of a fully functional PC that slips easily into your man bag should gain appeal over the year.The early products to market,such as the Samsung Q1( see the picture) proved,however that, that long battery life alone won't make the UMPC an instant success.Easier input controls will make UMPC much more attractive to the computing professional

The days of three phones, mobile,landline and internet, may be be numbered , as 2007 will witness more handsets that function across all these diverse environments.

The idea is simple: at home,you use the handset to make call across the internet,driving down bills.Step out of the house and the handset switches to your mobile operator network.The big different is that when you enter a wireless hotspot - slowly gaining a large footprint,especially in London for example, the phone revert to a Wi Fi signal to allow internet calls once more. The latter option could provide massive savings for companies, especially those whose executive operation mainly in large city.

Skype and The Cloud already have a mobile service up and running,although it does not include a traditional mobile network to fall back on when out of hotspot range,while both Orange and BT ( the name of communication company) offer Wi Fi in the home and mobile on the move.The biggest stumbling block is persuading wary mobile operators to join the party and fill in the gaps between hotsport .Nokia is backing the UMA ( unlicensed mobile access) bandwagon with the 6136 ( picture left side) a mobile phone with built in Wi Fi.

The BBC plans to provide downloads of its programming during 2007, promising a see change in the way we watch television.Its iPlayer is part of a bigger picture ( also featuring deals with Microsoft ) aimed at making the public broadcasters content more accessible and relevant.

Accoding to the Beeb's director of new media and technology, Ashley Highfield " the iPlayer will offer you cath up television on your computer,up to seven days after tranmission.You will be able to download any program from the eight BBC channels and then watch it on your PC and,we hope, move it across to your TV set or down to your mobile phone,to wacth it when you want".

The move will alarm ISPs,which will have to handle the extra traffic and subscribers will have to keep an ever closer eye on their download caps.Trials and a Public Value Test are under way to assess the benefits to licence fee payers.

The oddly-named BBC IMP (Interactive Media Player) is a test system designed to allow you to watch BBC television programs and listen to BBC radio programs after they have been broadcast

When you run the program, you see a five-tabbed display. The first, called home highlights the new and favourite content.

The second tab, Guide, allows you to search the listing for programs to watch. This is really a Microsoft Internet Explorer window. From here you can find all the programs that the iMP can deliver to you.

BENQ Siemens E61

Fantastic battery life reasonable features.Wish it came in at more competitive price point

There is only so much left to be done with a candy bar design,right? Not exactly,as Benq Siemens demonstrated with its E61.It even won the Reddot Design Award 2006,so there.
The E61 is a no frills phone,it can make receive calls and does what most mobile phones do,but with a few tricks up its sleeve battery life, and MP3 capability come immediately to mind.

To ensure the E61 fulfils is alter ego role as a portable digital audio device, the E61 comes with a miniSD slot and dedicated player buttons mounted at the top of the phone.However, having everything mounted at the top half of the phone dedicated media playback buttons, external memory slot and SIM SLOT has necessited a thicker upper portion for the E61. It may look slightly odd at first,but hold it in your hand and it its very comfortable into the profile of the palm.

It battery life is one of the better one of the current lot, returning a standby time of 87 hours after 34 minutes of talktime and 37 SMS. Most settings were left at default levels, but I turned off the keypad sounds and bumped ring volume to its max. Taking into consideration itchy hands ( not mine! ) fiddling with battery juice suckers like the camera and its MP3 capabilities three and a half days of standby is not bad at all.

As a basic phone, dont expect anything more than 640 x 480 resolution from the E61 camera. It does not even have a LED,let alone flash,so forget about low light photography .

In everyday applications,the E61 is very user friendly, each key is slanted upwards for easier navigation and key presses are rewarded by solid clicks.The 16 bit 128 x 160 display is bright enough under most conditions , but gets a little tricky under bright and direct sunlight.Reception is generally good while earpiece volume is fantastic, I had to reduce the volume to protect my hearing.The E61 comes with USB connectivity but that is as far as connectivity goes,as it does not have Bluetooth nor infrared capabilities. This would have been well and good with user looking for an entry level phone,but the price point, the justification is somewhat muddled. It does however have dedicated digital audio capabilities and expandable memory on its side,which is quite a plus hence in reality it up to you to judge the phone that you want and what you are willing to pay for it. HP iPAQ rw6800 Personal Messenger

I love the battery life,speedy performance and bright screen,but miss the keyboard of Mobile Messengers

HP took its first steps into the smartphone market with the hw6500 Mobile Messenger,but the Personal Messenger series is distinct in to way: it is more targeted at consumers and does not included a keyboard.

The rw6800 feels more like a generic smartphone than a sophisticated piece of hand crafted hardware.in particular, the silver plastic finish veers towards tacky in place and it is thick at 19mm.This thickness is partly due to a big battery,with a 1,530Ah removable unit inside.That led to some decent scores in our real life battery life test,lasting for around four days between recharges despite some heavy use - HP claims a talk time of five and a half hour and standby of ten days.Another boon is that unlike previous iPAQs,this one can recharge via the standard mini USB port.

It is also fast.A 416MHz processor means Windows Mobile 5 speeds along and whatever task we were performing we could not complain about the iPAQs responsiveness.The screen is similarly impressive,with 240 x 320 pixels and a bright backlight.The flip up cover is another plus,as it means you can shove the iPAQ into a pocket without worrying about scratches.

All this make the iPAQ an excellent device for viewing email. The trouble is started missing the keyboard of Mobile Messengers.Even sending a text becomes a bind when you have to use the mini on screen keyboard or character recognition.

Hi readers today I brought to you review about camera ,canon the 'biggest' name in camera digital company I think.I try my best review.... and thanks a lot to Mr William Ong for your permission to me to try your brand new camera,Canon EOS 400D

Today about Canon EOS 400D, so stay with my post if you want further information about it.
Any new camera has to have a megapixel rating to equal its peers,so the 400D is replete with a 10 megapixel sensor,up from the 8 megapixel of the 350D.That is not the only difference,though.It also addresses what's becoming the Achilles heel of the DSLR: sensor borne dust. The front element of the sensor is attached to a pieco electric element and every time the camera is switched off this vibrates for a couple of second in an attempt to shake off any particles.Assessing the systems effectiveness is difficult,but if you have had to go through the nerve wracking process of manually cleaning a sensor with an air blower you will appreciate the help.

Among the other minor changes is the presence of nine point auto focus system,borrowed from its big brother the EOS 30D.The 350D is seven point system was adequate but occasionally struggled the newer system seems a little faster and more sure footed in low light.And while the burst frame has not increased beyond 3fps,the burst depth has been more than doubled from four RAW frames to 10 or up 30 or so JPEG frames.

The body design is almost identical to that of the 350D,which means that the handgrip is smaller than that of most competitors.the only big physical change is at the back the body,where the old 1.8in LCD monitor and secondary LCD settings display have been replaced by a single 2.5in screen.This mean that all camera settings aside from the basic shooting mode,which is still selected by the top mounted rotary control- are set via the colour display.To reduce the distraction of having a screen lit up underneath your nose,there is a proximity sensor beneath the viewfinder that deactivates the screen when you put your eye to the camera

This change has two consequences.First it increases the sluggishness of operation due to the slight switch on delay of the screen.Second,since the battery pack is the same as the 350D and the screen power draining backlight will be on for more of the time,battery life is reduced.On the face of it this is not a problem,since the battery life of all canon models these days is excellent,but it means that if you do start running low in the field you cannot deactivate the screen to save power.The upside is a larger monitor.

Conventional wisdom has it that more megapixels equals more noise,and I was worried that in bowing to market demands for higher numbers,the basic image quality of the 400D would have decreased.Thankfully, that is not the case, and there is no discernible difference in noise perfomance or image quality,it is as excellent as ever.Even at ISO 1,600,where noise is apparent,its quality is closer to film grain luminance noise than the far more distracting chrominance noise that plagues lesser cameras.If you buy the standard kit with 18 - 55mm lens,which has not changed from 350D,the limiting factor is the quality of the lens itself,which tends to produce obvious chromatic aberrations.Replacing it with a higher quality optic will pay dividends.

If you are 300D owner with a large investment in Canon EF lenses,or a first time buyer on a tight budget,the 400D is a worthwhile purchase.

Hi,I writing again.Today about headphones...Listen to your music it was meant to be heard and cut out the background noise in the process,5 headphones from 5 company..so lets reading my review.I think it is the best for me,how about you guys?....

Everyone knows the standard iPod earphones are not up to the job,and the other MP3 players on test also shoot themselves in the feet by skimping on headphone quality.Here I haven't just rounded up a selection of expensive earphones,but found ones that reduce or block out noise.
With less noise,you can listen at a lover volume without losing quality and damaging your hearing.And as a final bonus,since all bar the Thomson set seal the sound in,you won't have abuse hurled at you on public transport from fellow passengers.

The Thomson's HED25ANC offers active noise reduction via a small box halfway down the 1.5m cable.The single AAA battery is not supplied,but the headphones fold and come with a small pouch and airline adapter.The foam pads don't create seal on your ears like PXC 150s,but flick the switch on the box and background noise does reduce noticeably.However since they don't seal,reduction is not as good as the PXC 150s and you lose bass frequencies.Sound quality is fairly good for the money,and if you are after bargain they won't disappoint.

The Koss SparkPlugs has a flimsier thin-gauge 1.2m cord.There is no carry case,but the earphones have earplug style foam cones that do a good job of sealing out external noise,and a spare set is also included.Just note that the fit is not tight enough to use with when exercising.If you like plenty of bass,the SparkPlugs should appeal.The trouble is that everything else sounds muffled,so they are best suited to dance music.

Shure's E2Cs are a more expensive option,but you get a lot for your money.The cables are thick gauge and since they wrap around the top of your ears there is less chance of damaging them if you accidentally snag a cord.They also come with a hard zip up case and selection of rubber and foam plugs to ensure the perfect fit.However,I still found it difficult to get a good fit and it was time consuming to put the earbuds in each time.But all the effort is worth it as sound quality is excellent.

If you dont like in ear headphones the Sennheiser PCX 150s are the best here.They are expensive at 49 pound sterling( for UK consumers),but are lightweight and fairly comfortable.They come with airline and 3.5 - 6.4mm adapters.The soft padding forms a good seal over you ears and the active noise cancelling circuitry is effective.On buses and trains, the engine noise still cuts in but the PCX 150s let you listen a lower volumes than standard headphones,They don't fold like the Thomsons and there,is no carry case,but sound quality is fantastic.Bass is not overpowering and vocals are crisp and well defined.

But the pick of the bunch are the Sony MDR EX81SLBs.There hook over your ears and isolate noise using soft rubber domes.Three sizes are bundled along with a carry pouch and 1m extension cable.The rubber hooks make the EX18 super light and comfortable,while the standard 40cm length is ideal if you are connecting to a player in a shirt or inside jacket pocket.Sound quality is excellent.Bass is well reproduced once you have established a good seal in your ears.Vocals are clear and treble is a well defined.Good job for Sony.Ok guys just all for today,happy reading....

Hello,it me again,this is a busy week for me.I got a lot of works and must finish off all the works before this Friday(paper work ect...).Next week I will not post the new article,cause I go back to my home town till Wednesday .

Today I discuss about hard disk MP3 players.Hopefully all of you get the benefit from my writing. Emm.. carry your whole music library with you,along with movies and photos

Apple iPod 30GB( and 80GB) sports a 60% brighter screen and battery life is extended to 14 hours for audio and 3.5 hours for video ( for the 30GB version).It weighs only 156g and sofrware improvements include the new search feature where,like the Creative,you can scroll though the alphabet with the click wheel to save time in long lists.You can now buy games such as Pac-Man and Tetris from the iTunes Store.Video looks good on the 2.5 in screen,but it cannot compete with the Archo’s 4in display.Also,codec support is not as wide as the Creative,lacking WMA and protected WMA.The iPod is a good choice,but only if you do not have WMA files in your library.

The Sony Walkman NW-A1200 tips the scales at 110g.It is similar to the NW-A1000,but offers an 8GB hard disk.It also supports MP3,ATRAC3,unprotected AAC and WMA files.Unlike others here.The navigation pad is no match for the Creative’s touch strip,especially with a large music library.I think the Top100 option and the Artist Link button,which can find songs and artists related to the current song.The problem is the software- Sony still hasn’t introduced compatibility with Windows Media Player.Instead,you use the counter intuitive SonicStage,which is apain when you want to add music.

Neither is the Cowon iAudio 6. It has a paltry 4GB hard disk.But it’s by far the most pocketable here( and weight just 58g). Plus it has come suprising features too.It support Mp3,OGG,FLAC,WMA and WAV files.Despite the 1.3in OLED screen,it supports MPEG4 videos and photos.There is also a line in on top direct recording,and FM radio and atext file viewer.But menus are fiddly and the headphones a poor quality,which makes the FLAC support pointless.But the poor capacity at this price makes the Cowon one to avoid.

The Creative Zen Vision:M is cheaper than the Cowon,but has a 30GB hard disk (a 60GB version is imminent).The 2.5in screen is superb,allowing you to more comfortably watch DivX,Xvid,WMA or Mpeg1,2 or 4 movies,while the battery lasts a shade over four hours.If you are just listening to music ,it will last for about 14 hours.The Zen weighs 164g and DRM friendly;there is also an FM radio with recorder.The touchpad allows quick browsing through lists.While you can also jump to any letter in the alphabet to save scrolling.If an adapter were not needd for USB,power and A/V output the Zen would be just about perfect.Even so it is still the one to buy if you are primarly after an MP3 player.

If video is a priority,consider an MP4 player like the Archos Gmini 500.It costs more than the Creavite,but boasts a 40GB hard disk and a fantastic 4in widescreen TFT with aresolution of 480 x 272. It is bulky at 124 x 24 x 76mm and weighs 322g,but it is a small compromise for the superb video quality.MPEG4,WMV and AVI files are supported,and the screen is so bright that you can comfortably watch a three hours movie without eyestrain.You can expect five hours of life watching movies and 15 hours with MP3.With the extra bulk,I can only recommend the Archos if video ia a priority,but the Gmini is asuperb alternative to the Creative if it is.Ok just all today.I wish all of you enjoy it bye…Happy reading,and for all Chinese around the world ,Happy New Year!

When you entire music collection is stored on adivice that is no bigger than your mobile phone,it seems a shame not be able to have the contents of this tiny jukebox at your disposal when you are in the car.Unless you have a car stereo with a tape player(into which you can plug an inexpensive tape adapter),the only real option is FM transmitter.

If you happen to own an iPod,there are plenty of FM transmitter to choose from.One of the most popular is the Griffin iTrip Dock.Since it is powered by the iPod,there is no need for any batteries,but it means it wont’t work with older,non-docking iPods.As it doesn’t connect via the headphone socket,you don’t have to worry about setting the right volume,but I found that it took up to a minute to switch on.The prequency is show on the small backlit LCD,and audio quality was good no metter where the transmitter was in the car.

It makes the Griffin abetter choice than the Kensington Pico,which is designed for those with a first generation iPod nano,hence the black finish tiny dimensions. Again it is powered by the iPod,but there is no display frequencies appear on the iPod’s screen and are selected by the jog dial on the side.However,the signal wasn’t as strong as the iTrips,so the Pico had to be in exactly the right position to avoid interference.And even the quality wasn’t as good –a lack of treble made it sound dull.

For those who don’t own iPod,there are still plenty of options.One is the Digiana Audiax.It isn’t much bigger than your thumb and take just one AAA battery (or can be powered via the included cigarette lighter adapter).Operation couldn’t be simpler – plug the coiled mini jack lead into your player’s headphone socket,press the power button and select a prequency between 88.1 and 107.9 MHz.There’s a rudimentary LED backlight that only lights the centre of display,but the signal was strong and provided interference free audio from any position in the car.Audio quality was fine but when you are statinary it became obvious that voices were a little muffed.

A cheaper option is the iCarPlay,which plugs directly into your cigarette lighter.It has a tiny blue LCD panel,which is hard to read in daylight and awkward if your socket is not the dashboard in front of you.The two buttons let you select tha same range as the Audiax and as with that transmitter,the memory remembers you last setting when you power it on again.The 0.7m cord gives more freedom on where to place your player than the Audix.Sound quality was not bad,and the signal was fairly strong.Aside from the tiny screen the only downside is that you are limited to in-caruse-you cannot plug it indoors for use with a home FM radio.

The last one is the Belkin TuneCast II.It has a green backlit display and take two AAA batteries.There are good for several hours playback,but quality drops of noticeably as the cells lose power.Thegood news is the Belkin bundles an in-car adapter.The TuneCast automatically powers on whenever it detects a signal,and also powers off when it stops.The best feature though,is the built-in memory,which can be store four frequencies ( which you did then store in your head unit’s matching memories ),and if the current setting is not working you can easily select the next one without pulling over.The short lead means the player has to be next to the transmitter and I found it was picky about its location in the car.However,once you have found the ideal place sound quality tops the lot.

The Samsung YP-K5 might be 18mm thick,but this is to house the slide out 750mW speakers.With several EQ presets,the K5 beats most laptops for sound.It will play WMA DRM tracks and the alarm clock can wake you up with a particular track or FM radio station. The touch sensitive controls are little fiddly and there’s no scroll pad or wheel,but finding tracks is simple thanks to the bright 1.7in screen.Even with the speakers on it will last six hours,and five times that when using the decent headphones.If you need built-in speakers,it,it’s worth the money.

In term of value,though,nothing can compete with the Sandisk Sansa e200 series.It is unique in offering 6GB,and provides it for less than most 4GB models.The 4GB and 2GB versions are good value,plus an 8GB model is now available.While its mechanical scrollwheel is clunky compared to iPod,it is the quickest way to navigate alarge library,and one that supports WMA DRM tracks,among others.The 1.8in TFT is impressive as is the MicroSD card slot on the side,20 hours of music playback is decent and the e200 is stylish,does more than a nano (it plays video and has a built-in mic for voice recording)

I have seen enough copycats to last a lifetime- everyone will say their are different from the rest,butyou just cant help and notice the iPod-ish colours,iPod-inspired designs and so on and so forth

I am glad that absolutely nothing on Sony NW-S2055F Walkman,also know as the S2 Sports Walkman MP3 players,has anything that is even close to the 'i' bandwagon,and it looks bloody good too! What is not refreshing though,is Sony's predilection with model codes instead of just names.Just give us names it easier to remember.

back to the Sony Sport Walkman-its unique sylindrical shape and somewhat odd placement of control buttons may give an initial impression of user-unfreindliness and a maze of nightmarish navigation but,spend some time fidding with the contraption and it's actually very easy to use.A little bit of consultation with the owner's manual may be called for,no need for the cover to cover thing.

For those of you who cringe over the brand name Dopod,you should thik again,when you find out who they really are.Dopod is actually owned by Taiwanese gaint HTC the major powerhouse when it comes to manufacturing Pocket PCs and smartphones.

What I really interested in was the total functionality 959.It still pretty slim with an absolutely gorgeous 240 x 320pixel screen..Under the hood you will find a respectable Samsung 300MHz ARM processor with 64 MB RAM and 128MB ROM,along with a 1.3 megapixel camera and Bluethooth functionality.Sadly it was missing WiFi features.

The user will have no option except to realy solely on the 3G networks to browse the internet or download e -mail,which does ultimately put adent in the wallet.,But the camera 1.3 megapixels,it still pretty good,picture a shrap,crisp and clear.The battery was also impressive as it can easy last for 2 days on normal usage;though it will drop if it run on 3G networks.

In conclusions the Dopod 959 really does grow on you,if you give it a chance.The advantages of Dopo 959 are that it is feature packed with a lot of third party applications.The only real disadvantage is the lack of WiFi funcionality

When he's not scheduling or watching TV 'toons, Lazzo, the programming chief at the Cartoon Network, is downloading music onto his Apple iPod. He calls it the "most liberating" tool he's used.

Small MP3 players have come a long way since 1998, when they were first launched as alternatives to tapes and portable CD players. While earlier models held up to only two hours of music, new units from Apple, Creative Labs, Archos and Rio can hold as many as 4,000 songs. Prices and sizes have shrunk, capacity quadrupled.

Take Creative: Last year, it was selling its Nomad Jukebox with 6 gigabytes of space for $249. It was the size of a large portable CD player. It weighed 15.2 ounces.

Just out now is the $299 (with rebate) 20 GB Nomad Jukebox Zen, weighing 9.5 ounces. The Apple iPod, $399 a year ago for a 5 GB model, is now $299.

Leonard Armato switched to an iPod earlier this year, after suffering through workout tapes that often jammed. The switch "revolutionized my routine," says Armato, 48, of Los Angeles, the commissioner of the Association of Volleyball Professionals. "It's great for workouts because digital music doesn't skip, and my entire music library is strapped to my body."

While Creative boasts that Zen is the "smallest USB and 1394 hard-drive MP3 player," it justifies the claim because iPods work with only 1394, known as FireWire, to transfer songs from the computer. Most PC users employ USB.

The iPod is the smallest hard drive unit around; Apple has access to minuscule hard drives from Toshiba, drives competitors haven't been able to get. The iPod came out last November, with rave reviews for its design, functionality and size. Apple has dominated the MP3 player market this year. The iPod is the No. 1 unit, with a 15% market share, says NPD Intelect.

Because competitors couldn't get smaller, they responded with units that were larger and had more memory. This year, Creative used fewer and smaller buttons, a slim internal battery and tinier and more integrated memory chips to get within an inch of the iPod.

To get music onto the MP3 players, units come with software that converts CDs into MP3 files (known as "ripping"). You then add the MP3s with a few clicks of the mouse, similar to putting a bunch of files onto a homemade CD.

"I used to carry a separate case with 50 or more CDs when I traveled," says Todd Gray, an art professor at California State University-Long Beach. "Now, I just take my Nomad Jukebox with me and enjoy my tunes with no extra luggage. It's a dream."

The small MP3 players with flash memory still sell, and because they're smaller and cheaper, many people prefer them for jogging and cycling. A Rio 800, $299 a year ago, is $160. RCA just introduced the Lyra RD 1080 ($120), its smallest ever, at about 21/2 inches square.

"People always want smaller," says RCA's Mark Redmond. "The only way we could get smaller is to eliminate the display, which we haven't done because we still believe in the consumer being able to view what they're listening to."

Creative did that with finger-size MuVo, the smallest ever, which fits on key chains and weighs 1 ounce. Both the RCA and Creative units fit two hours of MP3s. Some critics have knocked Creative for eliminating the readout screen. Creative President Craig McHugh isn't looking back. "You don't want to look at an LCD while you jog. They want something that fits in the pocket."

That is because it has a very sleek body, can comfortably fit into one's palm, the keypad is well situated, the display is fairly compact considering the placement of the keypad as well. To add on to its reputation, the Nokia 5500 is armed with splash and dust resistant shell, ergonomic stainless steel casing and rubber grips. A 5-way navigational key has been fixed just below the display that serves to organize three dedicated modes namely a phone mode, music mode and the sports mode. The Xbox 360 has a Custom IBM PowerPC processor. This processor also runs at 3.2 GHz. However, Xbox went with a true 3 core processor compared to the one general processor of the Cell and seven additional DSPs. This configuration can do about 1 Teraflop.

The Nintendo Wii includes its Broadway processor, a PowerPC based processor running at 729 MHz.

Disc Media

Part of the reason the PS3 is so much more expensive than the Xbox 360 is because the Sony decided to include a Blu-ray drive on the system. The drive can play both Blu-ray movies and regular DVDs. The Xbox 360 comes with a DVD player and an HD-DVD add-on is planned. The Nintendo Wii uses a DVD drive; however, the system will not work for playback of movies, just Nintendo games.

Backwards Compatibility

The Playstation 3 is just like the PS2 was. You’ll be able to play both PS2 and PSone games on the PS3. Nintendo is taking things a bit further. Digital audio player technology is very much on the move. Flash memory is getting less expensive and hard disks are getting smaller and more capacious, so today's players give you more for your money than they did just a year ago. But new technologies will make them better still. Be on the lookout for:

Wired Connections. When digital music players were first introduced, USB 1.1 was the only game in town. The Universal Serial Bus makes it easy to attach peripherals, but USB 1.1 is better suited to mice and keyboards than to the demands of a digital audio player. It's a USB 2.0 world now, but many of the lower-end players haven't caught up yet. The difference is between taking several minutes or a couple of seconds to load a CD's worth of music. Apple's iPods run FireWire as well as USB 2.0. These connection options have roughly the same speed for data transfers. Some players even offer Ethernet, so you can share music files on your home LAN.

Wireless Connections. For a truly easy connection to your car's audio system, look for a player with a built-in or easily added FM transmitter. You can leave it on the seat or even in your pocket and it will transmit your tunes to an unused FM station. You can do the same trick at your home, in any room with a radio.

Memory Cards. A number of players, both solid-state and disk-based, have sockets for SD (Secure Digital) cards, but their usefulness is limited because a 256MB card costs $50 to $75, and you may find that music you transfer to the card may not play on your player if the card lacks the proper security keys. Players typically do not transfer SD card contents to their own memory. You're wiser to invest the money in more built-in storage.

Equalization. All but the most rudimentary players have tone controls, usually presets such as bass boost, bass cut, "rock," or "classical." An adjustable equalizer is better for tailoring the tone to your preference or to offset shortcomings of your earphones. Parametric equalization, which allows you to adjust the center point and width of each frequency band, is the most flexible, but is exclusive to the Rio Karma.

Beware gimmicks. A pendant-style player that hangs around your neck may seem like a great idea. But if it bounces around in your more strenuous workouts, it can be an annoyance. A wireless remote for your player? One more thing to lose. But a wired remote can put the controls closer to you when you're on the go. Some even have a window display that duplicates essential information on the main window.

Make sure the player can do the things you need it to do, and that access to the feature makes sense. For example:

If the buttons are small and indistinguishable from one another, you'll have to pull the player out and look at it to do anything.

If the screen is low-contrast with small characters, you may have trouble reading it.

Will you use the device at night? If so, does it have a backlight?

Uncompressed audio files are very large. A 1-minute CD quality stereo song requires approximately 10 MB of hard disk space. Without compression to reduce this size, relatively few songs would be able to be stored on a computer hard drive, and compact devices like portable MP3 players would not exist, or would cost thousands of dollars.
